Anderson Cooper got right to the point.

Last night, the CNN host noted a grim benchmark: Over 100,000 Americans dead from the coronavirus.

Many of those deaths could have been prevented if the United States had a better leader.

Cooper noted that the United States has about 5 percent of the world’s population and now leads the world with about a third of all deaths from the virus.

“We are a world leader in medicine, in medical research, and public health. We once created supply chains to help win world wars. We’re now a world leader in lives lost,” he said.

Trump, he said, is now pushing to reopen the entire country while mocking those who wear masks and practice social distancing.

“He once said he was fighting a war,” Cooper said. “Now he fights to weaken our defenses against further spread and weaken any sense of unity. Unity is what you need to fight a war.”

He played a collection of clips from Trump press conferences in which Trump downplayed the impact and spread of the virus, from his promise it would disappear one day like magic to his later proclamation that if only between 100- and 200,000 Americans die, he’s done a great job.

“Good job,” Anderson noted. “A hundred thousand dead and counting. Millions of lives changed forever, by the loss of those lives. Millions of moments that will never unfold. He said nothing today about a hundred thousand dead, but he’s proud of the job. Proud of the job he’s done in testing.”

What came next was a collection of Trump’s astounding word salad on testing, how anyone can get testing to how too much testing is a bad thing.

Cooper continued: “Remember when President Bush got criticized for saying, ‘Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job,’ while people were waiting outside the convention center (during) Katrina.

“The president has been essentially saying that he’s been doing a heck of a job every single day. He’s been yelling it, shouting it. He seems to actually believe it. ‘We have prevailed,’ he said there. The administration had the exact same lead time as South Korea to get a testing and a contact tracing system up and running, and they didn’t.

“And now he’s chosen to kick the responsibility to the states while at the same time pushing these states to reopen and at the same time attacking masks and mocking leaders who wear them, though insisting everyone around him wear masks to keep him safe.

“How hypocritical is that? He talks now of a transition to greatness. Perhaps he might try a transition himself to decency, empathy, and competency. That would be a great transition indeed.”

Don’t hold your breath.

Trump’s latest distraction is a new executive order targeting social media companies after Twitter fact-checked his lies. His order will no doubt lead to several lawsuits. He doesn’t have any thoughts for the dead or dying.
