The title of this week’s “DC’s Stargirl” is “Wildcat,” and it can’t get any more blunt about revealing who will be the first recruit to Stargirl’s new Justice Society of America.
Warning: Mild spoilers follow.
Yolanda Montez (Yvette Monreal) wasn’t always the surly malcontent who chews on her angst and her meals at the outcast table.
Just three months earlier, she was the pride of her family, a scholar, and candidate for class president.
But she trusted the wrong boy, and now she’s living the teen version of “The Scarlet Letter.”
Courtney (Brec Bassinger) doesn’t care about any of that. She recognizes Yolanda could be just the person to join her team to find the Injustice Society.
She decides to trust Yolanda with her secret. Yolanda isn’t impressed, probably because she never heard of the Justice Society.
Yolanda is so not thrilled by the Wildcat suit. “It smells like gym class,” she says.
And how is a costume for a grown man going to fit a teenage girl? Why, it’s ridiculous. Or, as it turns out, not so much.
Their first outing is eventful. They witness another Injustice Society villain in action. Later, someone else learns Yolanda is behind that familiar cowl.
Elsewhere: The Dragon King, looking like a cross between a Muppet and a 1940s serial villain, makes a ghoulish request.
Pat (Luke Wilson) has an unsettling conversation with an, umm, outgoing resident, and later a black cat crosses his path. Those two incidents are related.
Courtney tells Yolanda that the enemy of her enemy is her friend. It’s also true that the the enemy of her friend is her enemy. Cindy (Meg DeLacy) promises Courtney: “You will never see me coming.”
Another future JSA member is name-checked: Listen carefully to Mike (Trae Romano).
Is Pop-Tarts sponsoring the show? Discuss.
It’s official: The cosmic staff is smarter than Courtney. It prevents her from making one lethal mistake. Well, as she tells Yolanda, she’s only been doing this super-hero thing for about a week. Give the kid a break.
