Family ties are challenged in the new episode of the horror series “Lovecraft Country” (Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO).

“Whitey’s on the Moon,” written by Misha Green and directed by Daniel Sackheim, finds Tic (Jonathan Majors), Leti (Jurnee Smollett), and George (Courtney B. Vance) enjoying their new luxurious digs set to “Movin’ on Up,” the rollicking theme of “The Jeffersons.”

Tic and George find themselves in rooms with shelves of books by their favorite authors. Leti finds a wardrobe filled with gorgeous clothes that all just happen to fit perfectly.

Now does this smell trap or what?

There’s one more mystery that troubles Tic: Neither Leti nor George can recall anything of their encounter with those horrible monsters the night before. Leti wonders if Tic is suffering from PTSD from his time with the military.

As they get to know their mysterious hosts, Samuel Braithwhite (Tony Goldwyn, “Scandal) and his daughter Christina (Abbey Lee), they gather some crucial facts on Tic’s family tree – but will it be enough to lead them to Tic’s estranged father Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams)?

“Not all white folks are out to get you,” Christina tells Tic.

Meh. The ones here sure act otherwise.

As Tic, Leti, and George try to survive the night, they are forced to confront their own personal demons.

Tic finds himself at the center of a dark ritual to open a portal to immortality – but his own family tree may hold the means of saving him.

By episode’s end, family secrets are exposed, the sky falls, and nothing for Tic will ever be the same.
