We need to talk about the last four minutes of last night’s ‘Lovecraft Country’

For a series that traffics in shocks, HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” last night topped itself with a stunner of a climax.

Warning! If you haven’t watched it, watch it NOW! We’re digging up the scary monsters here!

At the end of a disturbing episode that found Diana (Jada Harris) stalked by demonic imps, cops tried raiding Leti’s (Jurnee Smollett) home – only the protection spell blocked the supernaturally tainted chief of the force.

He retreated to the street and ordered all his men to fire on the house.

In the midst of this assault, Atticus (Jonathan Majors) heard the commotion and rushed to help Leti.

One cop – then all the cops – turned on Atticus, guns raised.

“Get your fucking hands up, boy!”

Atticus complied.

Leti knew exactly what was going to happen next. She dashed out the door to the street.

And everything slowed to a crawl.

The cop fired his gun.

The bullet cut through the night air straight toward Atticus.

That’s it. Show over.

You just knew it, right? Atticus was a dead man. You didn’t need to see any more. A show about the Black experience in the 1950s that was filmed months ago once again captured the times today.

But with a difference.

A giant monster, looking like a cross between a dog, a hyena, and your worst nightmare, erupted from beneath the street to intercept the bullet, saving Atticus.

He tore into the police force, chomping off heads, tearing into guts, tossing one cop through a car, another so high, he landed in another zip code.

It ended up being one of the most cathartic moments on TV this year.

Wouldn’t it be incredible if there really were some sort of subterranean behemoth who would rise up to save every innocent Black man who was threatened by racist cops?

Leave it to “Lovecraft Country” to drop a satisfying fantastical answer to today’s all-too-depressing headlines.

Leti and Atticus both think their respective spells raised this monster to protect Atticus. Yeah, we’ll see how well that works out.

There’s always a price to pay when you dabble in magic.
