In Amazon Prime’s long-awaited thriller “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse,” Michael B. Jordan rises as an action star for a new generation.

The “Creed” and “Just Mercy” actor, who also served as producer on the film, plays elite Navy SEAL John Kelly.

On a rescue mission in Syria with his team, Kelly discovers that the kidnapping of an operative was orchestrated by Russian forces.

Not long later, Russian assassins target Kelly and his colleagues.

They murder Kelly’s beloved wife Pam (Lauren London) and their unborn child and gravely wound Kelly.

Almost mad with grief, Kelly sets out to find his wife’s killers.

“They crossed a line. They brought their war into my house. They’re gonna play by my rules now,” he vows.

Kelly’s quest for justice ultimately reveals a conspiracy that threatens to push the United States and Russia to the brink of war.

“You’re supposed to be dead, so wherever you go, death will follow,” one Russian minion not long for this world tells Kelly.

Kelly and his fellow SEALS, led by Lt. Commander Karen Greer (Jodie Turner-Smith), end up behind enemy lines in the most dire way possible.

Writers Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples scavenge Clancy’s clunky, convoluted 1993 novel of the same name and distill a gripping story.

You might guess at least one major plot twist about ten miles away, but that shouldn’t hinder your enjoyment of the payoff.

With a running time of about an hour and fifty minutes, “Without Remorse” is lean and mean and swerves from one action sequence to the next. Jordan trained hard to do his own stunts, and the work is evident onscreen. In one exhilarating sequence, he battles a seemingly never-ending stream of armed prison guards.

A scene in a burning car is what-the-bleep scary; a downed plane sinking in the ocean, filling with water, is the stuff of nightmares.

For many Jordan fans, “Without Remorse” is just the action thriller they have longed to see him headline.

He is backed by a fine supporting cast. Turner-Smith is a reservoir of wry patience as Kelly’s commanding officer. Jamie Bell is Robert Ritter, a CIA officer who might be working for the other side. Guy Pearce plays Secretary of Defense Thomas Clay, determined to give Kelly the chance to track down his wife’s killers.

But Jordan drives this film, and he proves he’s more than up to the challenge. People’s Sexiest Man Alive has never looked so commanding or impressive onscreen. Even Adonis Creed and Killmonger – two of Jordan’s best-known characters – would hesitate to cross John Kelly.

The inevitable mid-credits scene (oh, thank you, Marvel Studios, for making that innovation so popular) suggests we’re not done with Jordan’s formidable warrior.
