‘Stargirl’ returns with familiar foes and new threats

“DC’s Stargirl” makes a long-awaited return to CW (Tuesday at 8 p.m.) with our young heroes facing the greatest peril of all – a family vacation.

Kidding!

Sort of.

Warning! Minor spoilers follow!

In “Summer School: Chapter One,” written by series creator Geoff Johns and directed by Andi Armaganian, Courtney (Brec Bassinger) leads her JSA team – including Dr. Midnite, Wildcat, and Hourman – on nightly patrols of Blue Valley.

There’s little more than a raccoon to be found.

Courtney is convinced they can’t lower their guards – Cindy Burman (Meg DeLacy) is out there somewhere, Solomon Grundy and the Gambler, too.

Yolanda (Yvette Monreal) remains haunted by her decision to kill Brainwave in the heat of battle.

Beth (Anjelika Washington) struggles to reboot her Dr. Midnite googles and makes a shattering discovery about her parents.

Rick’s (Cameron Gellman) temper yet again gets him into trouble. He suspects he knows exactly who is behind the rash of break-ins at local groceries.

Courtney annoys Pat (Luke Wilson) by digging into the JSA’s old case files.

“This stuff is my destiny,” she says.

Even Mike (Trae Romano) wants to join the family business – the JSA.

Pat wants Courtney to understand that she’s not just a member of the JSA – she’s a member of the family, with responsibilities to them.

Fair point.

But an evil decades old is about to resurface.

By hour’s end, it becomes clear the new Justice Society of America will be tested as never before. Judging from the premiere, this looks to be another great season.

Oh, how we’ve missed you, “Stargirl.”
